Welcome to The Courts of McKinney Junior programs. The Courts is a public tennis facility open to players of all ages and levels. We offer junior programs from 4-18yrs ranging from beginners to players preparing for college tennis. The overall program is organized by former touring professional and Tennis Director Matt Hanlin, whose experience from working with players such as Serena and Venus Williams makes the Courts an ideal training ground for any young player looking to improve in an enjoyable environment. We provided free court use for all of our enrolled junior players to ensure plenty of opportunities for practice after class hours without costing any extra. Our junior programs are divided into 4 main categories U10, Pre Junior Development (Pre JD), Junior Development 1 and 2 (JD), and Junior Development Competition (JD Comp) and are explained below.

JUNIOR TENNIS

U10 Program- Lead by Director of Junior Development,  Bill Shaw,  has quickly become the largest U10 program in the area due to the enthusiastic staff and various opportunities made available to these young players. All U10 players can participate on travel teams – Junior Team Tennis, they can play in our free junior ladder every Sunday, earn improvement wrist bands, and compete in the many sanctioned and non-sanctioned events we run at The Courts. Alternatively, the U10 player can just learn in a fun environment the skills, techniques, rules, and etiquette of this lifelong sport.  There are sub groups within this program.

Quickstart | Ages 10 & Under

  • Red Ball  | For ages 4-6

Players will be in the red ball class learning fundamentals, tennis coordination drills, rules, etc.  Beginners/intermediate would start to rally and play point games while still focusing on grips, stance, footwork, etc. These classes take place on the USTA approved 36 foot court using the low compression red balls.

  • Orange Ball | For ages 7-10

Beginners will learn fundamentals, tennis coordination drills, rules, etc. As they progress through the class, they will start to rally and play point games while still focusing on grips, stance, footwork, etc. These classes take place on the USTA approved 60 foot court using the low compression orange balls.

  • U10 Competition | Ages 10 and Under

This is the last U10 level of play before the juniors move on to a regular tennis ball. Most players are around 10 yrs when using the low compression green ball and have a good understanding of the rules, grips, techniques, and can rally with their peers. Coach Bill Shaw will have decided who is ready for the Green Ball class.

Pre-Junior

Development

Pre-Junior Development | Ages 11-16

  • Beginner to Advanced Beginner:  Pre Junior Development Class is directed by James Thompson former Tennis Director of the PGA Superstore Tennis and retail under the guidance of Bill Shaw, Director of Junior Development. James brings a wealth of knowledge introducing techniques, strategies, match play, to the beginner (pre JD 1) and advanced beginner (pre JD 2) players. These players are often getting ready to make their school teams or are already on a team and are training to move up the levels. These classes are offered 7 days a week and although your child can register for just one day per week we highly recommend at least 2 days of class per week to ensure the improvement rate is consistent with the other students.
